EU and Iraq sign co-operation agreement
The EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy Catherine Ashton and Iraq Foreign Minister Hoshyar Zebari signed on 11 May a Partnership and Cooperation Agreement between the EU and Iraq.
Ashton pointed out that the agreement is good for the EU, and good for the long term relationship between the EU and Iraq. “That is what the Agreement is all about: sealing our common wish to work together on a whole range of issues where we both have much to gain,” she said.
This is the first ever such Agreement between the EU and Iraq, symbolising opening a new chapter in relations between the two. Many EU countries had strongly boycotted US-led intervention in Iraq which toppled the regime of Sadam Husain.
