The Special Representative of the Secretary General (SRSG) for Iraq, Mr. Martin Kobler (pictured), welcomed the official appointment of eight members of the Board of Commissioners of the Independent High Electoral Commission (IHEC).
"I welcome this appointment. It now paves the way for the conduct of governorate council elections in early 2013," Mr. Kobler said. "The UN remains committed to supporting IHEC and its new Board of Commissioners in the preparations and conduct of elections."
"We now urge the Parliament to complete the process to select the last commissioner and the deputies as soon as possible," Mr. Kobler added.
While welcoming the appointment, SRSG Kobler expressed regret at the absence of women from the board, and encouraged the Parliament to take proactive action to include women at all levels of public life.
SRSG Kobler also thanked the departing Board. “With commitment and professionalism, they have overseen several rounds of elections since 2007 under difficult circumstances to strengthen democracy in Iraq,” he said.
