US Training Program Takes Iraqi Aviation Safety to New Heights
Nov 7th 2012, 23:01

Officials from the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) recently visited Iraq to train a group of 22 students from the Iraq Civil Aviation Authority (ICAA) and Iraq's Department of the Air Force on aviation accident investigations.

The training took place from October 14 to 18 at Iraq's Aviation Training Institute and supported Iraq's efforts to meet investigation standards developed by the International Civil Aviation Organization.

The U.S. Embassy in Baghdad, through the U.S. Department of Transportation, sponsored this training program as part of its commitment under the Strategic Framework Agreement to support Iraq's development of its air transportation and safety field. The U.S. Embassy will continue supporting the ICAA as it advances its capabilities to investigate the causes of aviation accidents.

Speaking about the training program, U.S. Ambassador to Iraq Stephen Beecroft (pictured) stated, "The United States is proud to support Iraq in this important endeavor," adding, "This training is an important step in the ICAA's efforts to further developing its long-term capabilities to ensure the safety of Iraq's civil aviation industry, for Iraqis and others, traveling to, from, and within Iraq."

The U.S. National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) is an independent U.S. government agency responsible for determining the cause of transportation accidents and promoting transportation safety. The training provided by the NTSB was the first time the agency had specifically tailored a course to the needs of an international audience and delivered it in a foreign country.
