Iran's Vice President for International Affairs, Ali Saeedlou, led a high level political and economic delegation representing about one hundred Iranian companies to the Kurdistan Region to participate in a high profile business conference today.

The Iranian – Kurdistan Region Economic Forum follows a visit to Iran by Prime Minister Nechirvan Barzani and a delegation of senior KRG officials to discuss improving economic and trade cooperation to better serve the interests of both sides.

In the opening ceremony of the conference, Prime Minister Barzani welcomed the Iranian delegation, saying: "This visit and conference is an important milestone in our shared history. Our main aim is to discover a way to further strengthen economic, trade and investment relations between the Kurdistan Region and the Islamic Republic of Iran."

"This visit is a good opportunity for both sides to better understand each other, and further strengthening our coordination will be mutually beneficial both now and in the future," he added.

The Prime Minister went on to highlight the significant growth in mutual trade that has taken place in recent years, saying that he was pleased to see the expansion of the private sector that this growth has made possible. "We in the Kurdistan Regional Goverment see the private sector as important for the economic development of our Region, and this forum will benefit both the Kurdish and Iranian businesses in this sector," he said.

Commenting on the delegation's visit, Iranian Vice President for International Affairs Ali Saeedlou said, "The main objective of our visit is to build strong and durable relations between the Iranian and Kurdish private sectors. It is in the interests of both sides to further develop economic, political and cultural relations."

He also said, "The government of Iran is committed to facilitating cooperation between Iranian and Kurdish companies. There is a strong desire from the government of Iran to broaden its economic presence in the Kurdistan Region."

The Heads of the Joint Committee for promoting bilateral trade both addressed the conference calling for increased cooperation.

The conference was attended by Ministers and high ranking officials, as well as senior businessmen from both sides.
